Selection Filter window width
« on: December 20, 2016, 08:09:35 AM »
The selection list window on the left side of the Selection Filter dialog is too narrow. When picking colors not all of the RGB values are visible. This makes it very difficult to distinguish between close colors with different G values. The dialog can be resized but the selection windows do not change.

The default Selection Filter window is very small compared to modern screens. We should be able to resize the dialog and have the window width change accordingly.

Mine fits, with the largest set of digits I could devise...

Screen resolution 1920 x 1080, viewed at windows setting of 100%

What does yours look like?

ps changing to 125% enlarges everything proportionally, so still fits, changing icon size in DCAD to 24x24 makes no difference.

Mine also cuts off the last two digits if the first two values are 3 digits long. 1920x1200 screen size. This could easily be fixed if the color bars were a little shorter.

Nvidia Quadro 2000 graphics card.

Screen resolution is 1920x1200.

I just forced my screen resolution to 1920x1080. It didn't change the dialog box problem.

It seems this is not just a matter of screen resolution 'distorting' the dialog box.
Attached is a composite of Phil's and my dialog boxes (approximately) resized to match. I got the tabs along the top to align pretty well - both vertically and horizontally - and the depth of the display window matches up pretty well, but that's where the similarities end.

what is causing such differences in the display?

Mine is a Windows 10 (Anniversary Upgrade) machine.

Maybe the video driver? It sometimes rears its influence in weird places. Nvidia in my boxes.

I have the same problem. I'm running an AMD Radeon HD 6700 at 1920 X 1080 with two monitors at same resolution; Windows 7 Pro SP1; my display is set to scale at 100 percent. BUT I am not using the default font for things like Window titles, Icon text, Menu text etc. (the default font is way too small to read being eight or 10 point and I prefer a serif font like Times New Roman).

It looks to me like Adrian and Dr PR's fonts are different. I also noticed that Dr PR's fonts are aliased differently.

[Edit] I also see that the very last checkbox item is vertically truncated (not enough height in the window to display the descenders).

Here is the Selection Filter dialog on my laptop. The windows are large enough to see all of the RGB information.

Initially the dialog box was a bit cropped with not all of the bottom line text showing, but I dragged the corner to get everything visible.

Win 10 64 Home
Toshiba laptop
Intel HD 4400 graphics.

NOTE: I NEVER mess with font type, size or color. I always use the Windows default. Years ago one of my programmer co-workers decided he wanted to customize everything  in Windows (95?) to create his own personal look. After he changed things a lot of programs no longer worked. He ended up with very light yellow text on a white background in Word. Another program generated light blue (cyan) text on a cyan background. It seems different programs used different Windows settings for text color, background color, etc., and the only thing they were tested on was the default Windows settings. Unfortunately my friend didn't record any of the default settings before he started messing with them and he couldn't reset them. He had to scrub Windows and reload it.

The problem seems to crop up (for me at least) when I am using normally-scaled text, and there are enough colors to necessitate a scrollbar. On your last image, Phil, there's no scrollbar.

If the windows text size is scaled up to 125% or 150%, I can see all the numbers even with the scrollbar (using default fonts, anyway).

Thanks Phil, we'll make the color preview panel larger (and/or shrink the color preview swatches).

Affirmed: Changing the font to 125% fixes my (DC) problem. We'll see how it effects other programs.
