Custom Hatch
« on: July 30, 2008, 04:03:21 PM »
A few years back one of this forums guru's had a set of hatch patterns for stones that I downloaded and have been using in DC 15-18.  The hatches worked very well, at least in DC15, 16 & 17. But in DC18-1 and 2, the file "Stone.dch" after being loaded and used in a drawing, the reference to it is lost after I close DC for the day.  It actually defaults to the solid color hatch with no reference to the stone pattern I used.  Am I not loading the file to DC18x initially, or what?

Where do you put the hatch file - in the drawing folder, the dc program folder, or the dc user folder in user/application data??

Rob, I dropped it into the dc program, as I've done each time I upgrade to dc.  It never seemed to stick to any one of  programs as I upgraded.

Dempsey, that was about the second time I downloaded the file from the forum. (Thanks again, PRL!)

Still would like to have it stay in the program and not have to reload everyday when I want to use it.

Any hints!  I thought I was saving it when dc18 asked to load it!

try this-it works for me in version18.2
go to where you keep the stone.dch file
right click on it. use the "OPEN WITH" command and open it in NOTEPAD
in the NOTEPAD click on edit then select all.

Now to to the DCHATCH.SYS  open that in notpad, scrow down to the bottom
place the cursor as if you are going to add a new line.
paste the STONE FILE in using the Ctrl V or the PASTE command in the EDIT bar

i forgot to add COPY aver you select all in NOTEPAD
also then when you go to use these hatch patterns the the Hatch command window does not show them very well  I solved this by making a bunch of squres in designcad and putting each type of hatch pattens in and then given them names, then printed them out for referance

Herbert, I've tried several times loading the hatch file into the dchatch.sys from notepad and it still is not showing up in the hatch pull down.  And the drawing that has the new stone pattern reverts back to the "solid hatch pattern".  The last time I tried loading it, I also added it to DCHATCHC.SYS file.  Now it is in both files.  Is that redundant?,...wrong?,...not good?, or what?
Also, I don't quite understand your "squares idea"?  Thanks, for your help.

The hatch patterns show up near the bottom of the list. Just above "Water"
in the hatch window, the stone show up as almost black, changing the hatch scale does not change the scale in the hatch window. (but it does on the drawing) Becouse I could not tell which stone was which in the hatch window. I drew out samples of each stone in designcad with there proper names. that way when I need to draw the stone, I do not have to guess at whichon I wanted

Mike just a thought. if you do see the stone hatch pattern every thing should be fine. if you are using an existing dc file, it may be looking for the stone and cannot find them. try deleting the hatch pattern, then redraw it in use the new setup

If you want to see the stone hatch patterns in the preview box you need to change using Notepad the second number on the second line in the system file named DcHatchc. Below is what I changed mine all too and the names and it works great.

AD_COBBLEFIELD
466 50000 0.125 0.125

AD_COUNTRY LEDGESTONE
208 35000 0.125 0.125

AD_DRESSED FIELDSTONE
334 40000 0.125 0.125

AD_DRIFTSTONE
397 23000 0.125 0.125

AD_DRYSTACK LEDGERSTONE
483 40000 0.125 0.125

AD_LIMESTONE
301 10000 0.125 0.125

AD_PRO-FIT LEDGERSTONE
140 20000 0.125 0.125

AD_RIVER ROCK
365 45000 0.125 0.125

AD_SPLIT FACE
354 35000 0.125 0.125

AD_STREAM STONE
624 40000 0.125 0.125

AD_WEATHER EDGE LEDGERSTONE
303 30000 0.125 0.125

AD_WATER WASH

I did what REF suggested. I like it and works fine. In 18 I needed to edit the file found at:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Account\My Documents\DesignCAD 3D MAX 18\DcHatchc.sys

Ref: I've been using a stand alone program called HatchKit 2.7. The only problem is that I don't know how to make the preview a usable scale. Any hints?

Although I agree that there should be an easier way to save the added stone.dch hatch patterns here is perhaps a workable solution.

  • Make a copy of DcHatchc.sys for possible recovery later.
  • Edit stone.dch with notepad to give a more meaningful name to the patterns and preview scale as per REF's suggestion, if so desired.
  • Load stone.dch with File... Custom Hatch Pattern... Load.
  • Adjust the visible images using SHIFT-CLICK (less dense) or CONTROL-CLICK (more dense), if so desired.
  • Save to DcHatchc.sys with File... Custom Hatch Pattern... Save. Everything you have done to the hatch patterns will be saved.

With V18.x I am talking about the DcHatchc.sys file in:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Account\My Documents\DesignCAD 3D MAX 18\

My gut feeling is that DcHatch.sys are the default hatch patterns, while DcHatchc.sys is suppose to contain the customized hatch patterns. DesignCAD just does no save them there unless we direct the save ourselves.

Thanks everyone for the input!  I'm going to try what Herbert, Ref, and Dempsey have suggested!  It should finally work.  Again, thanks!
